Race to your local Library for the Big Reading Relay

28 June 2013

Children across Northern Ireland will be racing to their local libraries to join The Big Reading Relay, which is taking place during the summer holidays.

From Monday 1 July, Libraries NI is inviting all children, aged 4 and over, and their parents /carers to sign up to this year’s sport-themed reading challenge in any local library or mobile library.

This annual initiative is the UK's biggest library reading challenge and this year Libraries NI is offering its own challenge, the Big Reading Relay, for children to enjoy in Northern Ireland libraries.

On registration, every child will collect their Big Reading Relay Race Card and free wristband and they will be invited to challenge themselves to read between 2 - 25 library books during July and August. During the challenge, they will be able to continue beating their personal best and their Race Card will be stamped each time they return their books.

Free fun library events will be held for children to enjoy to tie in with the challenge and on finishing the race, each child will receive a winner’s certificate.

Valerie Christie, Children’s Services Manager with Libraries NI explains:

“Every July and August, all of Northern Ireland’s 96 public libraries as well as mobile libraries, run the Summer Reading Challenge, a campaign to encourage children to read. Last year a record number of over 14,600 children took part.

“This year the campaign is based on a sporting theme, The Big Reading Relay Race and the aim is for the children to set their own goal for the number of books that they read during the summer and then they try to beat it.

“The campaign is also a great opportunity to introduce newcomers to the wealth of books in libraries and there will be sport-themed activities for children to enjoy during the holidays.”

The Big Reading Relay is just one of many exciting schemes that Libraries NI offers to encourage children to enjoy books and develop a love of reading.

Children aged 4 and over are invited to call into any local library and sign up to the Big Reading Relay from 1 July! There is no charge and admission to related summer events is free.
