Local Knitters give their Personal Best

20 January 2014

The Mayor of Newry, Councillor Michael Ruane attended an event in Newry Library recently to thank and recognise the achievements of a group of local volunteers.

These lively ladies have found a way, through their interest in knitting, to not only help others but to show how people can get involved in What’s Yours? part of Northern Ireland’s Personal Best Campaign which was inspired by London 2012.

Raquel Rodrigues Keenan, Outreach & Engagement Officer, Volunteer Now said; "Woman from all over Newry & Mourne, Armagh and Dungannon have knitted almost 2,000 garments over the past year for various local and overseas charities to support their clients. Volunteer Now works with various charities who benefit from donations  so we promoted this volunteering opportunity and encouraged a network of knitters to flourish, from groups getting together to individuals knitting from the comfort of their own home.”

Volunteer Now are encouraging people to take part in  What's Yours?; simply think about what your personal best could be, it can be anything from taking that first step into volunteering, a sporting achievement, learning a language to getting more involved in your community or, as this inspirational group of knitters did, raising money for charity.  The challenge is completely personal to you and the choice is yours.
