Belfast Lough Sailability

16 September 2014

Belfast Lough Sailability (BLS) had a very busy weekend - 6th and 7th September - participating in events from as far away as Kinsale Co. Cork and as close to home base as you could possibly get Carrickfergus.

In Kinsale, BLS sailors and support crew enjoyed a fabulous weekend of sailing and making friends, representing Ulster at the inaugural President's Cup inter-provincial Sailability championship - superbly organised by Kinsale Yacht Club and theIrish Sailing Association. A weekend of close racing in boats specially designed/adapted for sailors with disabilities in 4 different classes – hansa 303s, squibs, sonars and skuds (the last two classes are makes of boats used in the Paralympics).

And we came 2nd! Congratulations to the winners: Munster!

Meanwhile back home at the Dinghy Regatta on Saturday 6 September hosted by Carrickfergus Sailing Club,  BLS had 5 Hansa 303 sailboats and 10 sailors out on Belfast Lough in blustery conditions.  Steve Frecknall and Thomas Quinn got a first along with a trophy and Elizabeth Black and Jonny Gruhn came second both winning medals.  BLS also helped the event by providing safety cover and mark laying in the disability launches Searover and Rosy.

Well done everyone.

As a volunteer organisation, BLS continues to train its volunteers throughout the autumn and winter.  You can also volunteer and help us over the winter months preparing our fleet for the 2015 sailing season. We would love to hear from you.  Contact details below.
