Turn over a new leaf this New Year and Volunteer for the National Trust!

24 January 2015

In spring 2015 the magnificent restoration of Mount Stewart will be unveiled to the public after a three year, 7.5 million project that has restored the Mansion House to its former glory and the National Trust is currently recruiting additional volunteers to help showcase the work to visitors. Those interested are encouraged to attend the Volunteer Open Day taking place on Saturday 24 January to find out more about the roles available, meet current volunteers and to get a behind-the-scenes peek at the house as it enters the final phase of restoration.

Key facts about volunteering with the National Trust across Mount Stewart and Strangford

  • The National Trust cannot function without our amazing volunteers.  Without them, we cannot look after our historic places and green spaces for ever, for everyone
  • As well as Mount Stewart, the National Trust looks after land across the whole of the Ards Peninsula and around Strangford Lough, Northern Ireland’s first marine nature reserve
  • We currently have over 200 volunteers working in 24 different roles, from Visitor Experience Volunteers in the House to Countryside Rangers and from Gardeners to Education Guides: your skills and abilities can be utilised in so many diverse ways!
  • Some of our volunteers have been with us since the National Trust began to look after Mount Stewart in 1977
  • We hold regular events for our volunteers including training days, talks and social get-togethers – volunteering with us is a great way to make new friends
  • We are just coming to the end of a three year restoration project which has seen our staff and volunteers move, pack, conserve and now reinstate 15,000 items: 3 kilometres of bubble wrap and 13 kilometres of adhesive tape were used as part of this process!
  • Mount Stewart welcomes over 150,000 visitors every year and this year, post-project we are expecting our visitor numbers to rise dramatically.  We want them all to have a brilliant time!  That’s why we would like to encourage lots more volunteers to help us tell the stories of this special place
  • Our Volunteer Open day on Saturday 24 January, between 11am and 3pm is a great way to find out more about volunteering across Mount Stewart and Strangford:  enjoy free entry, meet our current volunteers and take part in a range of activities and talks which will help you learn more about how you can get involved.  We would love to see you there!  Email VolunteeringatMountStewart@nationaltrust.org.ukfor more information.
