Community Champion Volunteer Programme 2015

11 February 2015

Carers Trust is a major new charity for, with and about carers. Carers Trust works to improve support, services and recognition for anyone living with the challenges of caring, unpaid, for a family member or friend who is ill, frail, disabled or has mental health or addiction problems.

Mind the Gap is a Big Lottery funded project managed by Carers Trust. The project aims to provide a range of practical support services for older carers over sixty years of age.

As part of the Mind the Gap project, Carers Trust is looking to develop their volunteer involvement, through a new Community Champion Programme. The programme involves establishing teams of local community champion volunteers across Northern Ireland, and is an exciting opportunity for existing or former carers to use their skills to support the work of the Carers Trust in their local community.

As a Community Champion Volunteer you may want to get involved in:

  • Promoting Carers Trust locally at key events, or by talking to individuals and carers groups.
  • Supporting community events and initiatives to promote Carers Trust.
  • Helping gather information about local people who may benefit from the Mind the Gap Project.
  • Identifying local carers in your community who may benefit from the Project.
  • Participating in the monitoring and evaluation of the Project.

As a Community Champion you can volunteer as little or as much time as you can.

To become a Carers Champion Volunteer you need to be:

  • Either a carer or former carer over 18 years of age, living anywhere in Northern Ireland.
  • Have an interest in working and/or supporting older carers aged 65 years and over living in your community.

The work will build on your existing skills as a carer/former carer and will be very rewarding, allowing you to be involved in delivering a valuable service to older carers in your community.

You will also develop new skills through accessing training with Carers Trust in preparation for your role and you will get to know lots of people involved in Carers Trust across Northern Ireland and your area!

The Community Champion role will give you the opportunity to:

  • Make a difference to your local community by allowing you to be involved in delivering a valuable service to older carers.
  • Meet new people and widen your community knowledge.
  • Use and also enhance your skills and knowledge.
  • Access training and support.

You will attend an initial Carers Trust induction session with the Carers Trust Outreach Worker in your area and be provided with full training before starting the role.

Throughout the Project you will be supported by your local Carers Trust Outreach Worker.

If you are interested in finding out more and feel you could give some time to this role, please contact Geraldine Quinn, Outreach Support Worker Belfast on 07881 783 438 or email gquinn@carers.org.
