Syria Appeal .... OXFAM urgently require volunteers

09 October 2015

Your help is needed on Tues 20 October!

Tuesday 20th October anytime between 9am and 5pm.

The Syrian conflict has forced 4 million people to flee Syria to escape the civil war, with thousands of men, women and children risking their lives in unsafe boats in a desperate bid to reach safer shores. Thousands more have already died trying to reach the safety of Europe.

The media coverage of the refugee crisis prompted generous donations of clothing from members of the public to Dublin Airport Authority and Retail Excellence Ireland.  The unexpected scale of the donations however meant that they needed to enlist Oxfam’s help at short notice to process the items.  Having brought the clothes to Oxfam warehouse in Belfast, they now need to be sorted into men’s, women’s and children’s items.  Full instructions on the sorting process will be provided on the day.  Your generous offer of time is what will allow this opportunity to help so many people, not be wasted.

Oxfam is on the ground in Syria, where 7.6 million people are internally displaced. Oxfam has been providing immediate and life-saving assistance to those affected by the conflict. We’ve reached more than 1.3 million people within Syria, Lebanon, and Jordan, with clean drinking water, hygiene and sanitation programmes, as well as cash and relief supplies.

Oxfam is also at work in Italy, providing life-saving support to those men, women and children who have been saved from the waters of the Mediterranean. Oxfam is providing housing, food, clothes and hygiene supplies for their immediate needs as well as legal and psychological assistance.

How can you help?

We have nine container loads of donated goods which need to be separated into men’s, women’s and children’s individual bags of clothing and essential items so it can be handed directly to refugees.

If you are free anytime on Tuesday 20th October and able to come to the Oxfam warehouse on  2 Edgewater Road, Belfast  BT3 9JQ  email lorraine.smyth@volunteernow.co.uk

Even if you have an hour or two to spare, you could make a huge impact!
