Volunteers' Week Day 6 - The Donkey Sanctuary

06 June 2016

Doreen Wylie Volunteers with the Donkey Sanctuary and Therapy Centre (DSTC) based just outside Templepatrick.

This is Doreen's story…..

"I started working with the DSTC four years ago helping children and adults to ride the Donkeys.

The role is demanding but thoroughly enjoyable. My role varies, sometimes I have to steady the rider and sometimes I lead the donkey, both roles carry great responsibility but I have been given full training for these roles and seeing the joy on the face of someone after being on the donkey fills me with such happiness.

I began volunteering after retiring as a school teacher, I love animals and children so this volunteer role suits me perfectly and I also felt like I wanted to give something back. I did not want to be sitting at home all day but I also didn’t want to do a paid job either. I am in control of how much time I want to spend volunteering every week, so I have dedicated 2 days a week to volunteer which leaves me time to do other things in my life.

I think everyone should volunteer - it’s  good for the mind and good for the Soul, so be brave, embrace change and volunteer!"
