Celebrate Northern Irelandís cultural heritage!

08 July 2016

Would you like to volunteer for one of the biggest heritage events in Ireland!?

European Heritage Open Days (EHOD) is an initiative, held every year in over 53 countries across Europe.  Its aim is to bring citizens closer together through focusing on the wealth of their individual and shared cultural heritage.  The event gives the public an opportunity to appreciate their rich architectural heritage by visiting buildings not normally open to the public.

This year, there are over 340 openers and events planned for EHOD weekend on the 10th & 11th September. Our events range from film screenings to tours and talks of historic buildings and much more! Our theme this year is ‘heritage communities’ and we have many events organised around this, including an Artisan Food and Craft market at Dunluce Castle.

Much of the success of EHOD is due to the efforts of our volunteers who take on a range of duties from meeting and greeting visitors to assisting with tours. Ken McCaw volunteered last year and enjoyed the experience “In September last year, through Volunteer Now, I got the opportunity to help out with the European Heritage Open Days.  I was able to help at both the City Hall and the QSS Artist Gallery in Belfast and they were two most interesting days.  Personally I learned a lot from the staff in both places and really enjoyed interacting with visitors and being able to help in many different ways”
