Volunteering - The Next Generation

04 October 2016

Volunteer Now proudly presented their review report of the Millennium Volunteers programme on Monday 26th September with the kind sponsorship of Sandra Overend MLA.

Sandra was joined by Barry McElduff MLA (chair of the Education Committee) and Minister of Education, Peter Weir, MLA.  Mr Weir noted that volunteers do not ask for, nor do they expect recognition, however it is important that we do recognise and celebrate the achievement of young peoples’ volunteering.  “I am therefore delighted to be asked to endorse the 200 hour Awards of Excellence certificates.”

The Minister went on to note that young people set us all an example by what they can and do achieve through personally committing free time to volunteering to do more and giving back to their communities.  Our MLA’s were joined by Fergal McFerran (President of the NUS-USI), Nicola O’Gorman (Volunteer of the Year with UUSO) and David Gavaghan (Chairman, CBI) and Wendy Osborne, OBE (CEO, Volunteer Now).  Jordan Law, young volunteer and Ballymena Academy student MC’d the event.

The review report was undertaken by Insight Solutions on behalf of Volunteer Now Enterprises Ltd and the in-depth study spoke to young volunteers, delivery partners and key stakeholders with ‘wanting to make a difference others’ the key reason why young people volunteer: ‘working with young people with disabilities has taught me how to be more explicit in my communication and better understand their needs’. The delivery partners noted to: ‘the young people who register are very committed to their volunteering, Millennium Volunteers is a bonus for them’.  Wendy Osborne thanked all those who participated in and attended the event  and noted the sense of belonging and social connectiveness that comes from youth volunteering.
