Befriending Week 2016 - Cathy’s story

03 November 2016

Befriending Week runs from 1-7 November and has two aims: to raise awareness of the issue of loneliness in our society, and to promote the great work of befriending services.

Volunteering With CLARE CIC.

Here's Cathy’s Story:

Cathy has been a volunteer with CLARE for almost two years. She has remained a volunteer with one particular lady for most of this time and the feedback from this service user is that Cathy is a positive and supportive addition to her life helping her maintain her independence. This is what Cathy has to say about her role;

“I am a mother and part-time mature student; I first heard about CLARE when they came to the college I was studying at to talk about volunteering opportunities.

I started volunteering with CLARE CIC in January 2015 as I wanted to be involved in supporting the elderly in some small way. It was something I always wanted to do. I liked the fact that CLARE CIC was working with the elderly in the local community to enable them to remain independent within their own homes and helping to reduce the isolation that many of them felt.

“CLARE as an organisation was able to help me find a way to volunteer that suited me and I have been perfectly matched with the right people. They have offered me guidance and training and helped me develop new skills.

“The reward from volunteering is knowing that you are making a difference to someone's life and through volunteering I have discovered hidden talents that have contributed to my own self- worth.”

The team at CLARE CIC are sincere, dedicated and motivated in supporting the elderly in the community and truly value the contributions made by all their volunteers in the North Belfast area.
