The VSB transport buddy service was developed to combat social isolation by supporting older people and vulnerable adults who live in the Dungannon and Strabane area to avail of the Door-2-Door transport service. This service supports those who find it difficult to use public transport. It is available seven days a week and can be used for appointments and a variety of social outings.
We are currently recruiting volunteers who have a couple of hours a week to spare, to accompany clients on a number of journeys until they feel confident in using Door-2-Door independently.
As well as the satisfaction of helping someone in their community the volunteer benefits from ongoing training and support. All volunteers participate in accredited Passenger Assistence, Disability Awareness and First Aid training. Specialised training is also available in the area of sensory impairment if required.
Older people have a wealth of life experience gained through work or through caring for family members. This knowledge and confidence is invaluable for supporting our clients. We are looking for people with patience, empathy and a caring attitude. This role may be particularly suitable for someone from a Health and Social Care background although this is not a requirement. We are looking for people who can spare just a couple of hours a week to accompany clients to medical appointments, grocery shopping, lunch clubs etc.
This invaluable volunteer role is a life-line for many clients who would otherwise be housebound without this service. One of the biggest hurdles in combating social isolation is encouraging people to take that first trip which opens up so many doors. Our volunteers are a reassuring companion for people on those first few outings until the client is confident in using the service independently. The service helps people to participate in college courses, social clubs and generally become an active participant in the local community again. The service gives clients their idependence and confidence back which ultimately leads to a much more fulfilling life.
Previous experience of working in Health and Social Care would be helpful but is not essential. The role requires patience, empathy and a caring attitude. Full accredited training and support is provided at a time that is convenient to the volunteer. All out of pocket expenses are reimbursed.
