Meabh Murray, 21, is from Finaghy in South Belfast and has just graduated from Queen's University with a degree in Social Work. As part of her degree Meabh had to spend time on placement, so she began volunteering with Mindwise in January. Mindwise is a charity whose mission is 'transforming lives and developing new visions for mental health by challenging stigma and discrimination and providing quality services and support.' Meabh volunteered Monday to Friday, 10am to 4pm at the resource centre at Annsgate House in Belfast city centre. The placement was organised through Queen's and Meabh was delighted to be placed with Mindwise as she was already aware of the great work they do.
Meabh is registered with the Millennium Volunteers Programme which recognises sustained volunteering among people aged 16 - 24. Certificates are awarded for completing over 50, 100 and 200 hours volunteering. Meabh said, "To date I have completed over 600 hours volunteering with Mindwise and received the Mindwise Internal Volunteer of the Year Award in June. As a result of this I was interviewed on Citybeat radio to help spread the word about the importance of positive mental health, especially among young people."
Although Meabh's placement is now over she enjoyed her time with Mindwise so much that she has continued volunteering. Volunteering opportunities with Mindwise vary and Meabh's involves talking with service users, offering support and help, media volunteering, taking part in training and organising arts and crafts in the centre.
Looking towards the future Meabh said, "I hope to work within the mental health sector and volunteering has allowed me to gain a great deal of experience in a relevant field. Volunteering has also improved my confidence and I really enjoy meeting new people and listening to their experiences. I would encourage others to consider becoming a volunteer for Mindwise as it offers a challenge for young people to participate, learn and develop."
