Kain Hamilton, 18, is a student at Foyle and Londonderry College and is currently studying for his A Levels. Kain volunteers at Altnagelvin Hospital in L'Derry. He heard about the volunteering opportunity through his Careers Advisor at school who suggested he get some experience of working in a hospital as he is interested in studying medicine or dentistry at university.
Kain has been volunteering at the hospital since last November and volunteers three or four times a week on the orthodontics and oral surgery wards. His role consists of a mixture of administration duties and observation. He files charts, tidies the office, sorts out dental models and various other small jobs. He also observes some procedures when the patients give their permission.
Explaining why he volunteers Kain said, "Many people might not associate volunteering with young people but I enjoy doing something good for other people. I am giving something back to the community whilst gaining valuable work experience which is a necessary part of applying to university to study medicine or dentistry. I also enjoy a good relationship with the staff who are always helpful and professional. I would recommend volunteering to other students especially as a way of gaining work experience for a future career."
