Mount Stewart House is a National Trust property near Newtownards. The National Trust relies on the support of volunteers to maintain some of their best-loved sites and buildings as well as some of their 'hidden gems'. Without the support of volunteers they would not be able to open their properties to deliver a fabulous day out for people to enjoy.
Stella Robinson is one such volunteer. She has volunteered at Mount Stewart House since 2001. Her volunteering is varied including working on reception, greeting visitors, working in the garden shop, assisting the education team and acting as a roving steward within the house.
Stella says, "Following my retirement I wanted to give some of my free time to something I believed in. As a member of the National Trust for many years I was inspired to get involved due to my love of Mount Stewart, the history of the family and the beautiful gardens.
I volunteer twice a week and also regularly help out at special events. I enjoy talking to people so having a friendly, outgoing personality is an advantage. I like providing help and assistance to visitors to the house, helping give them an interest in the National Trust and to contribute to them having a great day out. What I enjoy most about volunteering is meeting different people, especially foreign visitors, the companionship with staff and volunteers and working in such a delightful environment."
Asked to pinpoint a highlight of her volunteering to date Stella said, "My personal highlight would be meeting the general public and overseas visitors and also spending time with my fellow volunteers and members of staff at Mount Stewart. I would really encourage other people to consider volunteering with the National Trust. It is a great way to learn about National Trust properties and their history whilst making new friends and helping a worthwhile cause."
The National Trust are on the lookout for volunteers across all their properties in Northern Ireland, with a wide range of volunteering opportunities available such as wardens, gardeners, event volunteers, admin and office volunteers.
