Millennium Volunteer Gains Career Insight

Rachel Moore is a student at Lumen Christi College and has been volunteering at Altnagelvin Hospital since October, as part of the Millennium Volunteers programme, which recognises sustained commitment to volunteering. Rachel carries out administrative duties and also gets the opportunity to observe the medical staff at work.

Rachel says, "I want to pursue a career in medicine and thought volunteering would be an interesting experience and a good opportunity to find out how a hospital works. I have gained great insight into the running of a hospital and like meeting new people and interacting with the patients. Having a helpful nature and good social skills are a must for this type of volunteering, as is confidence and an open mind in order to get the most from your volunteering. I really enjoy my role and would encourage others to get involved as it is a great opportunity to gain work experience and insight into a career."
