Mona Rice - Easilift

Easilift - Mona Rice

Mona is a divorced grandmother of 12 and great-grandmother of 1! Originally from Cookstown, Mona came to Strabane in the 70's with her family. Mona ran a corner shop until 1996.

Mona took a step back from her business in 1996 due to health reasons, but still needed to be active and craved the social aspect that her shop had given her. In 2000 she responded to an Easilift Community Transport advertisement placed in the local press. She applied as a volunteer social car-driver, and became one of the first in the Strabane area! She has been with Easilift Community Transport for 9 years now!

Mona is a social car driver, meaning that she transports people every week (generally older people without transport or those who medically cannot drive anymore) to and from local health appointments, weekly shopping and the odd social event around Christmas time.

Mona enjoys her role because of the friendships and strong rapport that she has built up over the years with clients and volunteers alike. Mona believes that she benefits from volunteering as much as her clients do. Mona adds that she has a great relationship with the staff at Easilift Community Transport who are very supportive and well organised in terms of organising runs and prompting volunteers about clients needs.

Mona would encourage anyone to "come along and see, try it out and don't worry if you're unsure, there's no harm in trying!". Mona adds that Easilift Community Transport is very flexible in that you can "do as much or as little as you want!"
