Seven students from South Eastern Regional College in Bangor are volunteering to raise money and collect bicycles for Bike Aid Africa.
The students are currently studying towards a foundation degree course. Event Management is one of the modules to be completed and as part of their assessment they are required to organise an event with the proceeds going to a charity. The seven students have decided to organise and hold a fundraising event and a week long bike collection in the Bangor area.
Their volunteering involves the organisation of a table quiz to be held in Bangor including PR and advertising, seeking sponsorship of prizes and execution of the event. Additionally, the quiz will be followed by one week of bike collection in the Bangor area. All bikes and moneys raised through their volunteering event will go to Bike Aid Africa.
Bike Aid Africa is a local voluntary organisation, collecting old bicycles and parts. The bikes will be repaired and checked for roadworthiness by volunteers in our workshop and through other projects. The bikes are shipped through other charities to countries in the developing worlds and are used by aid workers, medical staff, teachers and community groups.
Maurice Ruddock, founder of Bike Aid Africa said, "We were delighted when we heard that the students nominated us as their chosen charity. The help we are receiving from the students and in fact from all volunteers, donators and partners is evidence of the value of the project and the difference it makes to others."
Both the table quiz and the bike collection week will be held in late April. Anybody wishing to find out more about the project can contact Antje Otto, project officer at Down District Volunteer Centre by phoning (028) 4461 9122 or email antje@downdistrictvc.org
