Introduction to Asylum Seeker and Refugee Issues

This 2 hour training delivered by Denise Wright of South Belfast Roundtable aims to give:

  • An introduction to asylum and refugee issues in the UK and NI in particular
  • An overview of the NI Refugee Resettlement Scheme and future Afghan Scheme
  • Facts on numbers, legal status and entitlements of both asylum seekers and refugees
  • An insight into the vulnerability of people who come to seek asylum in NI
  • An opportunity for some discussion around cultural awareness issues and challenges

This session is particularly relevant for staff and volunteers working with or planning to work with asylum seekers and refugees. Places are allocated on a first come, first served basis and are limited to a maximum of 5 per organisation initially.

NB** You may be interested in registering for the related Small Worlds Workshop being held before this awareness training. Small Worlds are café-style events hosted by members of Belfast Friendship Club, a meeting space for people from around the world (and locals too). The workshops provide a safe space for participants to encounter people from different backgrounds and parts of the world. You can register HERE.
