Standards and Practice

Good practice in volunteer management is key in enabling your organisation to effectively recruit, manage, retain and reward your volunteers.

Supporting strong governance

A strong volunteer board is key to effective governance. Volunteer Now works with NICVA and the Charity Commission to support organisations through:

  1. The Code of Good Governance and Health Checks
  2. The DIY Committee Guide for trustees
  3. Tailored training and advice for staff and volunteers

We’re also part of the Developing Governance Group and offer practical tools to strengthen your organisation.

Quality Standards

Volunteer involving organisations who embrace and embed good practice in volunteer management are more likely to recruit and retain volunteers, with both volunteer and organisation having a positive experience.

Volunteer Now support and recognise organisations through the Investing in Volunteers standard (IiV), Volunteer Friendly and the Kings Award for Voluntary Service.

Investing in Volunteers (IiV) is the UK Quality Standard designed to help organisations evaluate and enhance how they manage and involve volunteers. It supports continuous improvement, demonstrates the impact of your volunteer programme, and strengthens your organisation’s reputation.

Achieving this standard sends a clear message to current and prospective volunteers that they are valued and can expect a high-quality experience. It also provides funders with assurance of your organisation’s commitment to best practice in volunteer management.

The full standard can be downloaded from www.investinginvolunteers.co.uk

Throughout the process your volunteer managers will receive professional mentoring, support and advice to help them achieve the Award.

The Volunteer Friendly Award follows the IiV principles and is a standard to support, recognise and reward small to medium sized groups (maximum income of £200,000) who are good at involving volunteers.
