Family Volunteering
Family volunteering is a powerful way to bond, give back to the community, and introduce children to the importance of helping others.
Volunteering as a family can be an enriching experience, fostering a sense of teamwork and compassion. It’s about more than just donating your time; it is a chance to teach your children valuable life lessons about empathy, gratitude, and responsibility. When choosing a volunteering opportunity, consider everyone’s interests and abilities to ensure it is a rewarding experience for the whole family.
Sessions are usually just a few hours and don’t require committing to a long-term role, so it is easy to fit around family life.
Family volunteering activities are designed to be simple and accessible – no experience needed, perfect for younger people. Past examples have included helping to sort and relabel donated goods, supporting community clean ups, and helping at park runs. Activities are chosen so that everyone in the family can take part, whatever their age and ability.
Local volunteering can be just as fulfilling and is often more accessible. Community gardens, food banks, and animal shelters always need extra hands. These settings offer safe and engaging environments where even the youngest family members can contribute, making them perfect for first-time volunteers.
Think about:
- The causes you care about
- The ages of your children and what they will enjoy when they give their time
- The environment and what support you may need as a parent/guardian. The safety of your family is paramount
- Consider what you can contribute as a family. Perhaps you enjoy the outdoors, are good at arts and crafts, etc.
- How to make the most of your experience with your family – take pictures, talk about what you did, the impact you made and how it made you all feel.
