Do you have a couple of hours a week to help Guide Dogs NI change a life?

My Guide service matches trained volunteers with a person with sight loss to enable them  to safely navigate the environment, build self-confidence and increase social interaction; whilst maintaining dignity and promoting independence.

As a My Guide Sighted Guide you will make a life-changing difference to someone in need in your community. You will Increase the independence, dignity and wellbeing of people living with sight loss through the delivery of the My Guide service.

There will be an opportunity to be part of a bigger team with other Guide Dogs’ volunteers and to meet people, have fun and be part of your community.

Volunteering for My Guide tends to take around two to three hours a week at flexible times to suit you.

Guide Dogs offer a comprehensive training programme and ongoing support. You will be required to undergo an enhanced disclosure check.

Here are some examples of how the My Guide service is making a difference:

  • “My other senses come alive. We were walking along on a summer’s day and my partner smelt strawberries so we went into the fruit shop and bought a big punnet of fresh, juicy strawberries- it was such a treat. We ate them when we got home from our walk.”
  • “I can now go to the gym on my own and I’m quite comfortable doing it. I am quite shy and don’t like trying new things but Sharon helps me to do things I never would have done.”
  • “I lost my sight 5 years ago and I appreciate Anne’s help with girly things, she helped me pick my Christmas cards this year and it meant so much to me. Without Anne I’d be housebound- she’s amazing.”
  • “The best thing about volunteering with My Guide is that, not only are you helping people, but they are helping you.”
