This taster day is an excellent opportunity to get a sense of the practical habitat management work that our regular volunteers carry out, and a great chance to get outdoors in some wild and wonderful spaces! The RSPB Belfast Harbour Reserves are home to some of our most spectacular species in Northern Ireland, including common terns, black-tailed godwits, redshank and lapwing. Unfortunately many of these species and the habitats they depend on are at risk of being lost – that’s where you come in!
Whitehouse lagoon is a vital feeding site for wading birds such as black-tailed godwit, great crested grebe and oystercatcher, and is part of a much larger protected site in Belfast Lough. Unfortunately, with the combination of flows from the stream and tidal movement, the lagoon becomes a collection point for all kinds of unwanted plastic debris and litter, so action is needed to clean up this important site.
We will begin with a beach clean followed by some bird watching (binoculars provided). Come along and learn about the work we do to help nature thrive!
