Our Place in Space – Volunteer Guardians wanted!

  • Late April / May 2022
  • Derry / L'Derry

We are on a voyage across the galaxy in pursuit of the most outstanding volunteer crew — could it be you?

The Mission:

To find volunteers who will be part of creating an out-of-this-world experience on planet Earth.

The Project:

You will be part of the team helping to deliver a once-in-a-lifetime celebration of creativity which has been designed by some of the world’s most brilliant minds from across science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (STEAM), who have come together in an exciting new and unexpected collaboration — Our Place in Space.

Our Place in Space is an epic scale model of the solar system designed by the artist Oliver Jeffers, that will animate the riverside in Derry~Londonderry for 4 event-filled weeks before moving to Belfast and Divis Mountain, Cambridge in England, and finishing at the Ulster Transport Museum and North Down coastal path.

Taking place from April to October, there will also be a new interactive AR app and an innovative programme of learning opportunities and events.

Mission Location:

Currently, we are seeking volunteers for Derry~Londonderry during late April and May. Please let us know if you are available to volunteer in multiple locations and we will be in touch about future opportunities.

What are the opportunities?

There will be lots of ways for you to get involved. You may choose to be part of one or many — the sky’s the limit!

  • Local Legends: we need friendly, outgoing people with great local knowledge to help us make sure our visitors feel welcomed, informed and safe.
  • Backpack Heroes : bring your energy, enthusiasm and unlimited step count to our tours along the trail — no limit to space puns.
  • Event Energisers: help us activate and energise our exciting programme of outdoor and indoor events.
  • Digital Gurus: capture moments of magic along our trail and during events which will be showcased on the project’s digital channels.
  • Green Team: help keep our lovely riverside looking its best by helping with litter picks and clean-ups before and after the trail is installed.
  • Trail Buddies: we’re looking for friendly, supportive people who would be confident being a buddy to any trail or event visitors who might need an extra level of support.

What is in it for YOU?

We understand that you will be giving up your valuable time to be part of our volunteer crew, so we want to make sure you get something back. During your time with us you could:

  • Expand your knowledge on the solar system and gain insights into the creative and scientific process behind the project.
  • Develop and learn new skills to support your career ambitions or personal goals.
  • Meet new people, make meaningful connections and build relationships with like minded others.
  • Get your hands on some exclusive Our Place in Space
  • Gain hands-on experience whilst being part of one of the most exciting arts and cultural events to come to our shores.

There may also be opportunities to meet some of the brilliant minds behind the project during your volunteering experience.

How much time do I have to give?

That’s up to you! We will ask for a minimum of 2 hours a week, but we’d love to have you around for as often as you can spare.

How do I take part?

You can register your interest by contacting our Volunteer and Inclusion Coordinator, Paula Larkin, volunteering@ourplaceinspace.earth. You must be willing to undergo an Access NI check in compliance with our safeguarding policy.
