School Governors wanted

Department of Education currently have some school governor opportunities within voluntary grammar schools.  Governor appointments are open to individuals from all backgrounds; all that is required is an interest in education and a willingness to work as part of a team.

Each of our grant aided schools has a Board of Governors made up of parent and teacher members, members representing the interests of the owners or former owners and members drawn from the general public.

Boards of Governors are reconstituted on a rolling basis, usually every four years.  The Boards of Governors of most voluntary grammar schools are due to be reconstituted in 2021, for controlled and maintained schools the date is 2022.  The Boards of Governors of grant maintained integrated schools are reconstituted on an ongoing basis.

The aim of the reconstitution process is to ensure that the membership of Boards of Governors complies with statutory requirements and, as far as possible, that they have the skills and experience to enable them, with the necessary training and support, to fulfil their responsibilities in relation to their schools.

The school Principal is responsible to the Board of Governors for the day to day management of their school and for maintaining high standards of education, while the Board of Governors provides strategic management, constructive challenge and accountability.  The Board of Governors is the decision making body that is responsible for effectively holding the school’s leadership to account.

Voluntary service as a school governor provides an opportunity for individuals to make an important contribution to their local community and to develop a variety of skills which could be of benefit in a number of other situations
